The splendid Loire Valley of France – Picturesque Golfing Holiday Destination

The splendid Loire Valley of France – Picturesque Golf Vacation Destination
———-
In France there are 280,000 registered golfers for 340 courses. This translates into lots of available tee times and no crowds on a course. Tourists to France who bring along their golf clubs will not be disappointed or have to face the challenges of arranging tee times as they typically do when visiting Scotland and Ireland.

Golfers can usually walk in on their own almost impromptu and make their own tee times at courses in France. There is ample space in front of you and behind you while playing golf in France. An unhurried pace of play results from this opportunity for tee times.

A great holiday golf destination needs the following; good accommodation at a fairly decent price, plenty of bars and restaurants for your evening entertainment. The Loire valley region in France offers great accommodation at a reasonable price, lots of things to see and do and, of course, a multitude of superb courses. This region has been providing a temporary home for golfers from England for the past few years.

One of the Loire Valley’s major attractions is that usually an impressive, loire valley castle overlooks the golf course. It is a visually striking region and one that definitely deserves special attention for any budding photographers out there.

Ardree, a rolling parkland with natural lakes, is overlooked by a turreted 16th century chateau that is awaiting development. Tourraine is another beautiful course. Although short, its raised small greens make approach shots extremely tough while various natural hazards keep you on your guard at all times. As its names suggests, Chateau de Cheverny is a grand setting for a day’s golf. The course was designed in 1989 and is located among 350 acres of gorgeous woodland, lakes and open countryside for a quite magnificent experience.

Les Aisses is another of those European style courses where you can choose from three loops of nine to form your round. Chateau des Sept Tours and Limere Orleans are also not to be missed.

The finest course in the region, however, is Les Bordes, consistently ranked in the top 5 of France’s best courses. The golf course is a work of art and thoroughly deserving of its secluded location not far from Chateau Chambord. In terms of cost and convenience, Les Bordes is eminently achievable and should rank high on your itinerary.

Built at the behest of the industrialist Baron Marcel Bich (of the Bic empire) and his Japanese trading partner, Mr Yoshiaki Sakurai, Les Bordes was originally dreamt up as a private club for their own pleasure and that of their friends. Leading architect Robert von Hagge was contracted and handed a simple but determined brief “to create a golf course that would prepare French golfers to play the finest courses in the world without being intimidated”.

Construction began in 1984 and, with money no object - a useful clause in anyone’s contract. Von Hagge’s creation is today the centrepiece of a course that enjoys to the full its majestic position in the Sologne, the ancient lake-studded forest at the heart of the Loire Valley.

In accordance with the owner’s instructions, scrupulous care was taken to minimise disruption to the surroundings, and what was once Bich’s hunting estate has been blessed with a course that has been ranked as one of the finest - and toughest - in Europe. Best of all, the place retains an air of privilege and privacy, but is without the tiresome airs and graces that can so often put you off a destination.

The risk-reward element is very much the name of the game at Les Bordes, and though the course does open up a good bit on the homeward nine, your ball-striking is tested even more thoroughly, with the slightest errors multiplied the further back you choose to play. Jean van de Velde’s course record of 71 gives you some idea of just how demanding the course is, not that the difficulty should in any way put you off playing here.

Les Bordes is one of only two courses in Continental Europe to enjoy the highest rating in the Peugot Golf Guide to 1000 European courses. All in all, the Loire Valley offers everything the travelling golfer requires.

Wino Forever Johnny Depp loves life at his Castle In France

Johnny Depp loves his french chateau and his loire valley wine.

You might not spend $16,000 for a bottle of 1978 Romanee Conti in a London restaurant and hang around with Rolling stones bad boys Keith Richards and Ron Wood, but you can spend a week or two living like Johnny Depp in a French Chateau.

He spends 6 months a year when not filming living happily in a village in France with his wife Vanessa Paradis former Chanel girl and their two children, Lily-Rose and Jack.

“Each morning, I can go to the little village not far from my chateau, have a cup of coffee, sit there with my girl and not worry about the paparazzi,” he told reporters in 2001.

“I love America — I love going back, seeing my family and friends — but it’s wonderful to get back to France and be living in a tiny village with nothing around. There is still the possibility to live a simple life. You can go to the market, walk about, buy fruits and vegetables — the things they did 100 and 200 years ago. We have moments when we’re sitting in our house and our kids are playing, and we look at one another and think, ‘Thank God we escaped.’ ”

He says he is shocked by the gun violence in American schools and feels it is more safer raising a family in France. “I want to raise my baby away from all the weirdness.”

Depp fell in love with France while shooting the Ninth Gate here in 1998. Today, locals often spot him picnicking with his family, shopping for vegetables at the village market and riding around the countryside on his Harley-Davidson motorcycle.

Neighbours say “He’s someone who will join us old men for a friendly game of Boules on a Sunday afternoon then have a drink at the bar,” Depp, Paradis and their two children generally go marketing on Thursday mornings and can be seen on many Sunday mornings wandering around an open-air flea market. It is a very normal family life.

“Johnny often has a little chat with us in French. He’s good, but not fluent yet.”

Depp is also known for his love of French wines. He recently confessed to having his “Winona Forever” tattoo abbreviated (via laser) to read “Wino Forever.”

He announced to Figaro that Chateau Calon-Segur, a Saint-Estephe third-growth, is his favourite wine. In addition to plugging Calon-Segur as his favourite tipple because it’s both a great value and delicious, he’s admitted to admiring grand estates Petrus and Chateau Cheval-Blanc, in addition to Burgundy’s Domaine de la Romanee-Conti, purveyor of the most high priced wine in the world.

At 40, Depp loves to play loud electric guitar, wears clothes that could use a cleaning, occasionally orders $16,000 bottles of wine in restaurants, and hangs around with Rolling Stones bad boys Keith Richards and Ron Wood. He also has a huge collection of guns, (a paparazzi deterent) a habit he got from his father.
