Developmental After School Programs: Practical Good Parenting Advice

As a child grows into an adult, different aspects of their emotional, physical and mental self needs development. To assist a child reach their full potential, it is essential to recognize the child’s developmental needs and abilities. To be effective, after school programs should help children with tasks they must accomplish during each stage of development.

A child’s growth curve can be divided into three main parts:
1) Young child (ages 3-5)
2) Middle school (ages 6-8)
3) Older school (ages 9-12)

The four important domains of development are: The Physical Domain, the Social Domain, the Emotional Domain and the Intellectual Domain. Each of these domains needs to be separately addressed during the various phases of a child’s growth. After school programs should focus on developing each domain as applicable to the age of the child. Although the children participating in these programs may have similar developmental needs and age, do not expect development to be uniform. Kids will develop as and when they are ready. They must to allowed to develop at a rate that is natural for them. They must never be pushed too quickly.

Physical:
When children are young, they want to perfect skills that they have just learnt to control. A variety of movements such as jumping, catching and throwing delight them. The middle school child, however, wants to learn more complex skills and get involved in team sports. This is also the best time to learn about rules and discipline in sport. The older school child is ready for more adult-like activities that require greater structure and discipline, such as dancing, gymnastics, music classes etc.

Social:
Young children are observing others and will be interested in games where they play the roles of family members. They develop short-term friendships and need an adult’s presence to reassure them. The middle school child is fascinated by the world around them and will love trips to factories, public buildings etc. They want to know the ’why’ and ‘how’ of things. The older school child is ready to learn about different cultures, food and customs. They want to do some amount of social work too.

Intellectual:
Young school children will practice what they are learning. Middle school children want to learn more skills and will show interest in reading, drama and problem solving. The older school children are ready to research and probe. They enjoy getting a puzzle and pondering over it.

Any after school program needs to address the interests of the child depending on the category they belong to.

A shared interest is a great way for a parent and child to connect better. And face painting is one such hobby. What kid does not like getting their face painted. And, of course, older kids can learn face painting too. And such skills are really useful for themed parties, Halloween; and for fund raising events too. Find out more

What Makes A Great Piano Teachers

Whilst you certainly can learn piano yourself with the aid of a good online piano lessons course there is still much to be said for coaching from a good music teacher in person.

Private Piano Lesson
There is a world of difference, ‘though between a good and mediocre music teacher. So how do you find the best for your needs?

1. First ask yourself, do you really like your teacher as a person? Taking lessons from someone you get on well with personally will make you much more likely to want to stick with the course. Beginners often find reasons to give up their quest without much struggle so. Don’t let indifference to your teacher be your first reason to throw in the towel.

2. Does he design music lesson plans? A good teacher will think carefully about the exact needs of his pupil at every lesson. If feel your piano lesson is ‘made up on the spot’ rather than carefully prepared then you are not getting full value.

3. How long have they been giving music lessons? Experience of the piano lessons children need and the contrast of giving lessons for adults counts for a lot. What is your teacher’s track record of success? Don’t be afraid to ask.

4. Does her type of piano teaching suit you? If you prefer to play jazz piano there is no point in learning from a teacher who is only a great classical player. The piano lesson that suits you may not suit then next student. Get a teacher that suits your preference.

5. Do they effectively show you how to play piano? Many piano teachers will only cover what’s in the exam syllabus. They’ll teach you what’s in the book but you’ll still not be able to play much of what you want to play. Your teacher should show you WHY you play something, not just how. Then you’ll understand music from the inside out and be able to play anything.

6. Can they teach you to improvise? Reading notes from the page is an important skill for sure, but when you really understand the keyboard and can create an accompanyment yourself at will then you really are a musician. It’s a lot more fun too. Even Mozart, Bach and Beethoven were great improvisers although most piano teachers today who hack their way through classical printed music would not know where to start.

To make progress with the piano in the fastest time it is always worth supplementing your tuition with a good home study course on DVD. We review a selection of the best home courses at www.playyourpiano.com

Essential Good Parenting Guide: Financing Home Schooling

When people talk about teaching their children from home in the absence of any definite or structured curriculum, it is perhaps natural to think that homeschooling is inexpensive. But this is far from the truth. Although homeschooling does not stick to any particular text, this is perhaps more of a bane than a boon, when it comes to finance.

When you need to make sure that your children receives state-of-the-art education so that they can compete with regular school goers, expenses will naturally mount. The actual cost of educating a child at home is surprisingly high. Up-to-date textbooks, course materials, a library, computing equipment, lighting, specially designed furniture all cost money. In this case, the cost may be slightly lesser when it comes to homeschooling the second child. Add to this any additional tuition cost for tutors who come to teach subjects that cannot be handled by parents, like higher-level math or science. The total cost can be a bit mind boggling.

If you take another important factor into consideration, homeschooling costs may effectively triple. The need for having one of the parents tied to the home and fully dedicated to providing education deprives the family of a second earning member. The average homeschooling teacher is usually a lady with a college degree. This means that she can easily bring home a pay of $35,000 or more. It is also interesting to note that most families that have more than 2 children do not opt for homeschooling at all.

But, there are many who have been successful in carrying out homeschooling at low rates. This is dependent on the size of the family, the support group, the type of materials used and the availability of the material. When successive children can reuse the materials, cost goes down. Much of the course material can be got from vendors of homeschooling materials. A membership in a public library, theatre, concerts, ballets and other cultural events also help in minimizing costs. Sometimes, it is even possible to barter expertise. For instance, the mother of an 8-year old gives dancing classes, and her daughter receives drawing classes for free. Support groups allow you to share the cost of field trips, science projects and fairs.

Whatever the cost, advocates of homeschooling say that the benefits far outweigh these considerations. When you are able to decide what knowledge your child receives and when he or she should be taught and to what extent, it gives you a lot of freedom and a lot of power. Both the children as well as the parents can benefit from this mutually enriching experience.

Of course, parent and child must enjoy doing some fun things together. Have you ever tried face painting. It is great fun and a really useful skill ti have when it comes to themed parties, Halloween and if you offer your services at a local community fund raising event. Find out more:

10 Ways To Begin Assuming Control: Top Self Help Help

At first glance positive thinking and Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) have nothing in common. But many people with ADD develop negative thinking patterns because they become frustrated by challenges and frequent feelings of being overwhelmed. This negative outlook then makes it even harder for them to cope with those challenges and move forward.

Practicing positive thinking allows people with ADD to focus on their strengths and accomplishments, which increases happiness and motivation. This, in turn, allows them to spend more time making progress, and less time feeling down and stuck.

The following tips offer practical suggestions that you can use to help you shift into more positive thinking patterns:

1. Take Good Care of Yourself
It’s much easier to be positive when you |are eating well, exercising, and getting sufficient rest.

2. Remind Yourself of the Things You Are Grateful For
Stresses and challenges don’t seem quite as overwhelming when you are constantly reminding yourself of the things that are right in life. Taking just 60 seconds a day to stop and appreciate the good things will make a huge difference.

3. Look for the Proof Instead of Making Assumptions
A fear of not being liked or accepted often leads us to presume that we know what others are thinking, but our fears are usually not reality. If you have a fear that a friend or family member’s bad mood is due to something you did, or that your co-workers are secretly gossiping about you when you turn your back, speak up and ask them. Don’t waste time worrying that you did something wrong unless you have proof that there is something to worry about.

4. Stop Using Absolutes
Have you ever told a partner “You’re ALWAYS late!” or complained “You NEVER call me!”? Thinking and speaking in absolutes like ‘always’ and ‘never’ makes the situation seem worse than it is, and programs your brain into believing that certain people are incapable of delivering.

5. Detach From Negative Thoughts
Your thoughts can’t hold any power over you if you don’t judge them. If youcatch yourself having a negative thought, detach from it, witness it, and don’t follow it.

6. Squash the “ANTs”
In his book “Change Your Brain, Change Your Life,” Dr. Daniel Amen refers to “ANTs” - Automatic Negative Thoughts. These are the bad thoughts that are usually reactionary, like “Those people are laughing, they must be talking about me,” or “The boss wants to see me? It must be bad!” When you notice these thoughts, realize that they are nothing more than ANTs and squash them!

7. Practice Lovin’, Touchin’ & Squeezin’ (Your Friends and Family)
You don’t have to be an expert to know the benefits of a good hug. Positive physical contact with friends, loved ones, and even pets, is an instant pick-me-up.

8. Increase Your Social Activity
By increasing social activity, you decrease loneliness. Surround yourself with healthy, happy people, and their positive energy will affect you in a positive way!

9. Volunteer for an Organization, or Help another Person
Everyone feels good after helping. You can volunteer your time, your money, or your resources. The more positive energy you put out into the world, the more you will get back in return.

10. Use Pattern Interrupts to Combat Rumination
If you find yourself ruminating, a great way to stop it is to interrupt the pattern and force yourself to do something totally different. Rumination is like hyper-focus on something negative. It’s never productive, because it’s not rational or solution-oriented, it’s just excessive worry. Try changing your physical environment - go for a walk or sit outside. You could also call a friend, pick up a book, or turn on some music.

You certainly need to adopt a positive attitude if you are going to act as the MC at the wedding reception of a friend or family member. Learnmore:
