Top Parenting Assistance: Dealing With Colic

There isn’t any one single treatment that has proven itself to be absolute in curing colic. But there are ways to make life easier for both you and your baby.

For starters, you should check to see if your baby is hungry. With young babies, you simply place your finger under his chin and if he tries to suck or move toward it, then he is hungry. But, if your baby is not hungry, don’t try to continue the feeding as it is a waste of time. Instead, try to console your little one in some of the ways listed below. Contrary to what people say, this is not spoiling the child. Some of the things that you can do to console baby include:

* Walk with your baby or sit in a rocking chair. The continuing movement is normally soothing to a baby. Just be sure to place their head near your chest so that they can hear your heartbeat.

* Try burping your baby more often during feedings.

* Rest your baby across your lap while he lies on his tummy. Rub your baby’s back. This will help get air out of his tummy and prevent gas. If he burps; even better.

* Put your baby in a swing as the swaying motion can have a soothing effect.

* Put your baby in a car seat and go for a ride. The vibration and movement of the car are often calming.

* Play relaxing music like classical (Mozart is my favorite) or slow music as some babies respond to sound as well as movement. There are some CDs of relaxing music specially created for mothers and babies.

Caring for a colicky baby can be extremely frustrating for both the baby and the parent, so be sure to take care of you, too. You can’t be soothing to the baby if you are riled up you will not be able to soothe the baby. For mothers this can be even harder to deal with.

Mothers need to try to relax, and remember that your baby will eventually outgrow this phase. It’s important to stay positive.

You should also remember that, if you need a break from your baby’s crying, take one. There is nothing wrong with this. Friends and relatives are often happy to watch your baby when you need some time to yourself, even if he is crying.

Parenting is a challenge. You have to develop the right strategies for every stage of a child’s development. Potty training is something that fills many parents with dread. But it does not have to be daunting if you prepare correctly. Find out more

Stopping Your Child’s Interruption Habit: Good Parenting Advice

Teaching your child not to interrupt can sometimes be an exercise in frustration. Telling them there’s a time to interrupt (for example, in case of a fire) and a time to not interrupt (boredom) isn’t enough. But putting these principles into practice is easier said than done, especially for a very verbal or high-energy kid. That’s why now is an excellemt time to revisit some basic lessons about good manners and teaching your child to wait their turn to speak.

For starters, set a reasonable expectation. School-aged children have a difficult time holding their thoughts for more than a few minutes. Indicate to them as best as you can that you’ll be with them as soon as possible and then stay true to your word.

Develop some ideas for them to occupy themselves with while you’re on the phone or otherwise unavailable. Keep a box full of puzzles, colorful markers, crayons or other quiet toys nearby that they can only use when you have to make a call. Set snacks and drinks within easy reach so they don’t have to interrupt you for help.

When you need to make a call or have an important conversation with a visitor, head off trouble by saying you’re about to phone someone or have a conversation and estimate how long you expect to talk. Ask them if they need anything before you make your call or have your conversation with your visitor. Then try your best to stick to that time schedule, and excuse yourself from the conversation long enough to check on them. Let them know you’ll be a bit longer if that’s the case and see if they need anything before returning to your conversation.

Reading is a great tool to teach manners. Find several books on the subject then read them together. Discuss afterwards what your child learned from the story and how they’ll handle a similar situation in their life the next time it occurs.

Of course, kids learn what they live. Your child is very unlikely to learn not to interrupt if they hear you, your spouse, or their siblings constantly interrupting each other. Your actions have a strong influence on your child, so be a good example and request permission to speak before speaking, and apologize when you inadvertently interrupt.

Your goal is to be a good role model for your child. You want to lead by example.

An excellent way to build a bond with your child is to have a shared interest. So why not take up face painting. Kids just love having their faces painted and being able to face paint is so handy for all those themed birthday parties, Halloween and other festive occasions.

Language Development From 1 To 3 Months: Top Parent Info

Keep in mind that these stages of your baby’s development are broad and that no baby will fall exactly within the time frame of these expected milestones. They are only a rough guide.

One month. Your baby will understand speech long before they begin to speak. From birth they will look at your face and listen to your voice. They will make a small range of noises that will begin to mean something to you, such as their way of exhibiting hunger or pain. These noises will include crying and certain sounds that your baby makes while they are breathing.
Your baby’s cry is an important way for them to communicate. Crying lays the foundation for speech as your baby learns to control the air that comes from their lungs and learns how to use their vocal cords. Crying is your baby’s way of telling you that they are hungry, upset or cold.

Two months. Your two-month old baby is beginning to pay more and more attention to their world. They will be fascinated by the sound of your voice and will follow it around the room with great concentration. The different tones of you voice will keep them interested for short periods of time. Your baby will respond with a variety of cooing sounds, vowel-like sounds, and sometimes some consonant sounds such as a “k”. You will find that your baby has quite a collection of cooing sounds that they use to communicate with you as well as discover how to use the sound of their own voice.
Talk to your baby as much as possible to encourage their cooing response. Look directly into your baby’s eyes to show that you are listening. This helps to establish signals of communication between the two of you.

Three months. Your baby will recognize your voice and will turn towards you when they hear you talking. They will be starting to laugh out loud and will often startle themself until they learn that they are the one making the sound. Your baby will be making sounds such as “ahhhh gooo”. They will squeal when they are happy and content, again often startling themself as they learns their own abilities.

Continue to talk to your baby as much as possible, as well as sing to them and read them stories. The more you communicate with them and let them know that you are listening the more they will try to communicate with you.

Supply And Demand, Predictions And Prices

In our modern, pampered world, many people don’t want to take care of themselves and are always crying out for the government to “do something” about whatever it is that is causing discomfort in their situation.

Unfortunately for all of us, those cries for the government to “do something” do not fall on deaf ears. Politicians will jump at any chance to buy more votes for themselves by “doing something” in the name of helping people.

When government response is applied to the field of economics and prices, just about every step the government enacts is going to cause more pain and discomfort than it solves.

The free market, with honest weights and measures, is the most efficient means available to humanity for providing the highest standard of living for the entire population of the globe. Inevitably, if some outside force, such as government, interferes with the free market, it will cause everyone to experience a lower standard of living (with the possible exception of those who directly benefit by the government action, but even then, that is not always the case).

Prices are simply the free market’s means of finding a balance between supply and demand.

Let’s use an extreme example of prices for a new Lexus in order to explain the point. Suppose that the cost of a new Lexus, in today’s dollars, was only $10.00. Yes, ten dollars apiece. How many would you buy? I’d probably buy 50. That would cost about $1,000.00. I would be more restrained by the space to keep them than by the price. Everyone would surely want to buy more than one, and many people would buy dozens of them for that price.

It is easy to understand that a low price will encourage an extraordinary amount of demand. The reverse of that is also correct. If a new Lexus cost $50,000,000 each in today’s dollars, the company would sell very, very, very few of them. The exceedingly high price would greatly discourage demand.

If the price is too low, the result it that there is too much demand and the manufacturer can’t keep up. If the price is too high, there is too little demand and the factory goes idle for extended periods of time.

Prices too low will spur too much demand, while prices too high will greatly curtail demand. This also applies to profit. If one company is earning an extraordinarily high profit by manufacturing an item, other companies will see this and decide to manufacture a very similar product. This results in more competition and greater supply. The effect of an increase in supply will be a lowering of prices. That is how supply and demand interact with each other.

Price is like a thermostat that regulates supply and demand. If anyone forcibly plays with that thermostat, it is going to upset the balance of supply and demand.

What typically happens when the government gets involved with rising prices is that the central banks start the process by printing too much currency. In so doing, all the well connected elitists receive the fantastic benefits of the new money by the billions, while the common man doesn‘t. Instead, as this new money gets introduced into the economy, the value of the money gets diluted. It is like taking one gallon of milk, pouring it into two containers, and adding a half a gallon of water to each. Magic, presto! Now you have 2 gallons of milk.

Except that you don’t. You merely have one gallon that has been diluted by 50%.

The central bank creates out of thin air new money by the billions. Once it is spent into the economy by those that receive it, the effects of that inflation are felt by the entire population several months later in the form of rising prices. As this process continues, at some point the public will cry out for the government to “do something”.

And those all-to-eager politicians will indeed take some very visible actions by passing a price freeze law. This is price controls. The problem with this approach is that instead of making the population more comfortable with steady prices, it will heap more misery and a lower standard of living on the population.

The population cries out for relief from misery, and the government delivers even more misery as a result.

How so?

The answer lies in supply, demand, and profit. Let’s return to our example of the Lexus. Let’s assume that a new Lexus sells today for $50,000 dollars. Let’s also say that it cost the company $40,000 to produce it. As the central bank dilutes the value of the money, the price to purchase that Lexus goes up to $60,000 and cost to produce it goes up to $50,000. More central bank dilution of the currency further dilutes the purchasing power and the price to purchase that Lexus goes up to $70,000 and cost to produce it goes up to $60,000.

This cycle continues until the price to purchase that Lexus goes up to $200,000 and cost to produce it goes up to $190,000. At that point the cries from the public are overwhelming and the government steps in to “do something” about the problem. Instead of doing what it should do and implement an honest currency that cannot be diluted (which would supremely benefit the people and put an end to the well connected insiders stealing from the system for their own benefit by diluting the currency), the government institutes price freezes to stop the rising prices.

If the cycle of diluting the currency continues while price controls are in effect, it will bring about catastrophic results. Let’s go back to the example of the Lexus. What if the value of money is further diluted so that the price to purchase that Lexus should be $220,000 and cost to produce it is $205,000, but the government implemented price freezes and Lexus is only able to charge $200,000 due to the recently enacted price control laws? How long will Lexus continue to lose $5,000.00 per car they produce? What if the central bank continues to dilute the currency, and the cost for Lexus to produce a car goes up to $225,000?

You may be wondering how the cost for the Lexus company could rise with price controls in effect? Well, Lexus doesn’t buy all the necessary raw materials in the country where the price controls have been enacted. Therefore, their costs can and do rise. The result is that at some point they will discontinue making their cars, or at the very least, stop selling their cars in the country where the price controls exist. No company can exist if it costs it more to make their product than the product can legally be sold for. Therefore the company will simply stop making and selling their product in the country with the price control laws.

With price control laws enacted and a continuing of currency dilution by the central bank, eventually most companies will not be able to function properly and will have to cease making and selling their product in the country with the price control laws. Taken to the extreme, the store shelves will become empty as no company will be making the items needed to restock the shelves.

This is not just some philosophical ivory tower theory. It is reality. Just look back at the Soviet Union a little over a decade ago. Yes, the official price of sausage may be $1.00 per pound, but if there is no sausage available, what good did the official price bring about? Did it make the people’s lives any better? The grocery store shelves in the Soviet Union were always empty. People would wait in line for hours and even days for the chance to buy what little might become available. 5,000 people lined up to buy 6 chickens. Is that the type of situation that the government wants to create by “doing something”? Cheap auto insurance is one thing, unavailable car insurance is another.

Price controls bring about shortages. Honest weights and measures that the elite cannot water down to their own advantage bring about price stability. We will all suffer from shortages when price control laws are passed and enforced. If the current financial trends continue, prices will continue to rise at an ever faster rate. Price controls will likely be passed before Bush’s depression reaches its final end.

Rather than cry for the government to “do something” as a nanny, Americans should demand the total elimination of the current dishonest financial system that only benefits the powerful insiders. Americans should demand that government enforce the Constitution, and re-institute and protect honest weights and measures for the benefit of the people, rather than prevent honest weights and measures for the benefit of the few well-connected insiders.

America needs to wake up before it is too late.
